ROUGH CUT

I am fascinated with opposites: the terrifying and serine, the old and the new, the organic and industrial.  How can light be defined without the comparison of darkness?  I endeavour to create balance, contrast and symmetry.  The beginnings of these sculptures was to create something that directly conflicts itself.  Chandeliers that intend to contain and block light.  Using tactile and accessible materials, such as construction grade wood, breaks the barrier associated with their flashy and luminescent cousins.  High-Class objects constructed of mundane and industrial materials.  The opposition is important and obvious to the object itself, yet the beauty of its statement is in its subtly.

How the audience interacts with the object is directly opposite its origin.  Hung high and proud, large crystal chandeliers reflect light and wealth and demand attention without closeness.  The chandeliers presented here offer a different view of this notion, hung low and accessible, they invite the viewers touch and interact at close proximity.  The light dancing across the floor, walls and ceiling invite even more synergy.  While the viewers physical touch is not critical, it is encouraged.  These sculptures are created and constructed with care, however the marks of the construction are left on the object, the ticks for measurement, the numbers counting the wooden “crystals”.  Every mark leftover from its construction is left, as an indication of incompletion.  These objects directly confront and conflict their cousin’s stigmas.
